Before it was global, before it was a movement, and long before it was profitable — there was FUBU.
In this installment of our Flower Series, Focus Rich Clothing is proud to give flowers to the founding team behind one of the most iconic streetwear brands in history: FUBU (For Us, By Us). What started from a Queens basement turned into a $6 billion fashion force that changed the game for Black entrepreneurs, hip-hop culture, and urban fashion forever.
Founded by Daymond John, J. Alexander Martin, Keith Perrin, and Carlton Brown, FUBU wasn’t just a brand — it was a revolution.
FUBU: The Blueprint for Streetwear Independence
Launched in the early ’90s, FUBU became the first fashion brand to unapologetically speak to Black youth culture on a national and global scale. Its bold “For Us, By Us” slogan wasn’t a tagline — it was a declaration. It signaled that hip-hop had a seat at the table, and the creators of the culture could be the owners too.
From LL Cool J rocking the brand in a Gap commercial to the gear dominating music videos on BET and MTV, FUBU didn’t chase the mainstream — it made the mainstream come to it.
For Focus Rich, the story of FUBU runs deep. We see echoes of our own mission in their hustle: bold storytelling, self-funded beginnings, and a belief that culture and ownership belong together. Their legacy lives in every artist collab we launch and every stitch we sew.
Why They Deserve Their Flowers
-
They created opportunity when the fashion world refused to acknowledge streetwear as real fashion.
-
They built a movement that inspired future brands like Rocawear, Sean John, and yes — Focus Rich.
-
They made room for culture, community, and capital to coexist in one bold vision.
We give them their flowers not just for what they did — but for how they did it: with grit, integrity, and a commitment to representing the unrepresented.
The Legacy Lives On
Today, FUBU continues to operate with new collaborations, NFTs, and licensing deals — proving that longevity in streetwear isn’t about hype, it’s about heart. And for Focus Rich, they’ll always be the blueprint.
To the FUBU founders: thank you for proving that it’s not just about fashion — it’s about power, pride, and purpose.
